AUSTIN, Texas {January 5, 2016} – In Austin, startups and entrepreneurism abound, nowhere more so than at the first annual {Re}Verse Pitch Competition, with SCORE Austin playing a pivotal role in advising this unique competition’s finalists.

The one-of-a-kind [Re]Verse Pitch competition saw five Austin companies and institutions pitch their byproduct materials to social entrepreneurs, who ‘reverse pitched’ business ideas back to the companies on how they would turn that waste into viable business ventures.

Mentored by SCORE Austin’s Paul Strange, the winner was Brewnola granola bars, which won for its idea of turning spent grain – a byproduct of the brewing process – into “Brewnola” granola bars. Vowing to pay employees $24 an hour, locally source ingredients, use compostable packaging and donate a portion of proceeds to Austin-area homeless shelters.

“The Brewnola team had disparate skill sets and employment histories that proved to be very complementary to the {Re}Verse Pitch Competition,” says Paul. “It was an exercise that incorporated entrepreneurism, enterprise and savvy into what could be a winning idea for Austin and the environment.”

Seven SCORE mentors, including Paul, Thomas Barton, Celia Bell, Chuck Gautschy, Jim Grimsley, Robert Paino and Carleton Smith, advised the {Re}Verse Pitch Competition finalists.

The [Re]Verse Pitch Competition is a collaboration between the City of Austin, the U.S. Business Council for Sustainable Development, Impact Hub Austin and the RGK Center for Philanthropy and Community Service with additional support from a wide variety of community partners, including SCORE Austin.
