Generally defined, search engine optimization, commonly referred to as SEO for short, involves the overall process of obtaining visitors to various websites from search results in search engines that include Google.
Regardless of the search engine, each one has primary search results that are all ranked based solely on what they consider to be the most relevant to users. These are referred to as organic results due to the fact that they aren't driven by any paid advertisements and are also free.
SEO is designed to help with maximizing how many people visit a certain page or website, and it does this by making sure the site itself ranks high on organic results provided by a search engine.
There are many factors of SEO that have different weights, and there's no way any kind of consultant will be able to know not only how much each one will weight, but also when those specific weights will change as well. This is thanks in large part to the fact that Google has more than 200 SEO factors, as well as over 10,000 sub-signals to assist with ranking.
Many people question whether or not their website actually needs something like SEO. Most web traffic is driven by search engines, which can easily bring more and more traffic to a particular website. This is always the case regardless of what the actual purpose of the site may be. Search engines always provide what's known as targeted traffic, meaning that they bring users to look at whatever it is that you're offering.
Simply put, in order for any website to be able to compete and obtain all sorts of traffic, they will need a solid form of SEO. However, it's important to note that SEO isn't anywhere near easy. Once someone gets it, though, it eventually falls under the category of common sense.
In the end, it all really comes down to whether or not someone wants to learn everything they can about SEO rather than if they can actually learn it at all.
